Cadavre Exquis

These two photos are part of the group project Cadavre Exquis, exhibited at Bethanien Berlin in January 2024:

Borrowed from André Breton and the jolly Surrealists, the principle is as simple as it is ingenious:

One participant begins with their contribution and passes it on to the next person in line, who responds as freely, formal or content-driven as he or she likes. The réponse, however, is not passed back to the first person but rather to the next one in line..

This is repeated a total of 60 times, since in the current round we play the sequence parallely in both directions.

In this way a continuous series is created, that is connected through content and aesthetics even though until the opening of the vernissage, each artist only knows their own work and the one picture they received as template.

All photos can be purchased through ato.visions.

A project about megalomania, coincidence and arbitrariness.

Text by George Plesu, Borderline Art Space Gallery, Iasi, Romania:

Juliane Eirich investigated ways of inhabiting a space, tracing conceptual relations between nature and the urban environment, as the dynamic interstice of an annular causality that perpetuates standardized beliefs and behavioral typologies.

Many of Juliane Eirich's photographs were metaphors for the absence of human presence, the ambiguities between presence and absence drawing conceptual correlations between different types of instantiations that problematize the future of humanity, ecology or history.

Artefacts

The Artefacts series was photographed in Istanbul in 2015 within the context of a group project based on Walter Benjamin's text "on the concept of history". I imagined that future archeologists happen to find only one object left over from humankind and write our history accordingly.

Dale, 2014

Kindly supported by the Nordic Artists Centre in Dale, Norway

The Dale series pictures the moment short before a breaking point, an illusive calm before the storm. The photographs reflect the disorientation I feel in my live knowing something has to be redrafted, but still being in the process of analyzing and thinking about the right steps. It deals with the feeling of fear limiting action, the difficulty to know which side to belong to and how to break rigid paradigms.

Itoshima, 2011

In July 2011 I spent one month as an artist in residence at Studio Kura in Itoshima, Japan. My Itoshima series deals with the phenomenon of memory. I was inspired by an essay of Tanizaki Jun’ichirō called "In Praise of Shadows"

Korea Diary, 2007–2008

Due to a DAAD scholarship, I lived in Seoul, South Korea from February 2007 until September 2008. Every day of my stay I took one photo for my "Korea Diary"

German Village in South Korea, 2008

The German Village in South Korea, is an improbable creation, the product of this nation's shifting needs. In the 1960's and 70's, South Korea, poor and overpopulated, sent thousands of its citizens to work as nurses or miners in West Germany. Today, they and their German spouses are being welcomed back, especially in rural areas whose populations have been decimated by urban migration and declining birthrates. The authorities in Namhae County where the village is located has offered cheap land and construction subsidies to any Korean nurse or miner who had lived in Germany for at least 20 years, requiring that they build houses in one of five German architectural models.
